How does the need for psychotherapy or counselling emergence begin?
There are so many individual factors that could kick start the need to understand ourselves. For some, therapy emergence is a gentle and integrated process which develops as a natural consequence of a changing self accompanied by years of physical and psychological upheavals. Others may experience a more abrupt awakening by outpouring a steady anxiety to search for meaning and unfold choices and potentials. Some have intense physical symptoms, while others experience mainly emotional or psychological symptoms. With unresolved physical or emotional conditions coming up for resolution and release, psychotherapy and counselling is an awakening heralds calling for a great period of change in a person's life.
Does Counselling and Psychotherapy work ?
There is a great deal of evidence showing that counselling and psychotherapy do help people in many different situations. Mental health was also reported to be fundamental to overall health. Mental disorders were noted in meta-analytical reviews over the past 20 years to be real health conditions and the efficacy of psychotherapy and counselling show a strong dramatic pattern of positive overall effects that cannot readily be explained as a placebo effect. The question then is not “Does counselling and psychotherapy work?” But rather “How, and under what conditions, does it work?”
Are there good psychotherapists and counsellors and does psychotherapy and counselling lead to always good outcomes?
There is evidence to suggest that psychotherapy and counselling sometimes not only does not help but also actually makes things worse. Research supports that negative psychotherapy and counselling outcomes can be a result of psychotherapists or counsellors who underestimate the severity of mental health issues, use poor techniques, and are not equipped with the right training skills to deal with their clients’ interpersonal difficulties. It is therefore important to choose your counsellor or psychotherapist according to their qualifications and experience. Our team of counsellors and psychotherapists in Harley Street, Central London, are registered with The Health Professions Council (HPC). HPC is a new independent, UK-wide regulatory body responsible for setting and maintaining standards of professional training, skills, behaviour and health.
